World Voice Day 2015

World Voice Day 2015 is April 16th, tomorrow!

jazz singer, pop singer, singing pianist, world voice day

YOUR VOICE MATTERS! In so many ways. Believe me, I say this to myself as well…if you need to say something, if you need to express your feelings…then by all means, do so!! Now listen, I’m not giving you carte blanche to get all bee-otchy. Not at all! However, don’t let things fester inside of you until it turns into some boiling point of rage or fear or pain. Come on! What good does that do you??? Or the ones you love? I will often sit on something until the point of tears and not only is that completely idiotic, most of the time the other party didn’t know they hurt your feelings or that you felt a different way. Let World Voice Day guide you to USE your voice! Get your message out there. Sing, text, email, blog, talk on the phone…express yourself in positive and loving ways. You’ve got something to say and we all need to hear YOUR voice!

Yes, speaking up is hard, but you gotta do it. For your well-being and for the well-being of those you love.

WVD2015_voice_head-01-1024x785

Now, technically speaking (no pun intended), if you speak or sing for a living, how are you caring for your most beloved asset? Do you have a set warm up? Do you have good vocal hygiene? How about a great teacher? Not only does my teacher work on the scales and music theory that I need to know, but we work on proper vocal technique, good warm ups and further, we work on my teaching methods. I am constantly in search of how I can improve my voice and the voices of my students. It is my absolute desire to sing with beauty and grace and passion and zest and sassiness, until the day I leave this lovely Earth. I can help you find the perfect warm ups, set up a program of good vocal hygiene and share with you the apps I use to improve my voice. I also now have online lessons available! Check out more, here…

Let’s all learn to speak up and empower ourselves to live the life we want to live. Let me know how you plan on celebrating

World Voice Day!

You’ve gotta show up!

You’ve gotta show up! Show up to your class, your lessons, school, YOUR LIFE!  Get to your lesson, go to class, head out to your practice,  you just don’t know what you are going to miss!

People! It’s so crazy the way this phenomena happens. It even happened to my son and I was SO glad for the lesson! One day after school, he didn’t want to go to his Jiu Jitsu class. Hey! I get it! He’s only 7 and he is a busy boy. Top grades are important to this family, so he does his homework nightly, plus reading. He is involved in JJ, swimming and now it’s soccer season. Sometimes, you just don’t wanna go. Sometimes, you just want to sit on the couch and watch Minecraft videos, or his newest passion, climbing trees. I get it! Me, too! Except my guilty pleasure is conspiracy theories on Netflix, or sitting in the sun reading blog posts and looking at Pinterest. BUT! While we all need our downtime, if you are going to get ahead in your life, you gotta show up and do the work!

I love that this lesson was so profoundly learned by my Little Man at a young age. I will no doubt have to remind him of it from time to time. I’ve got to remind myself of this, lol! I’m teaching about 5 students today, some voice, some piano, some have a test this week that I’m helping them prep for. Today is Tuesday and it’s my day to take a lesson of voice and piano. In addition, I need to rehearse for a show I have on Saturday and I’ve got to get my newsletter out and this blog post done. This Mompreneur thing is really tough and I’ll be honest with you, today is one of those days that I am searching for my inner inspiration…

But, that’s ok! I know I will push forward and no doubt I will find the strength from God to make it through the day. My son and my husband and my music are all the inspiration I need. :-)

Let’s dig deep and find the strength and will and desire to live a big life with big dreams fulfilled! Step one is showing up!

Now, let’s get on with our day!

Check out the music of Karl W. Davis and The Sweetpeas!

Good morning, musical friends!
Today, I bring you the music of Karl W. Davis and The Sweetpeas! Their latest release, “It’s High Time”,  is garnering critical acclaim in the U.S. and abroad, and marks a fresh beginning in the career of this fire-and-brimstone gospel/blues powerhouse. Karl W. Davis was born in Folkston, Georgia, a small rural community with deep roots in the blues and gospel sounds. The kind of influences you may hear on “It’s High Time” will remind you some of the soul and gospel greats, like Al Greene, Syl Johnson and Harvey Watkins Jr.
I gotta say, my fave track from this CD is “You Can’t Keep A Good Man Down”. With sexy, soulful vocals,  combined with those fabulous horns, the female vocals are divine and Karl’s voice is right on point! This song, to me, epitomizes just what this artist is all about.
I played the Karl’s CD while I was making dinner and doing some chores and found myself dancing around and wishing my husband would hurry home from work! Lol!
Here’s what Karl says, “For me this album represents a brutally honest reaction to the end of a fifteen-year marriage. We wrote 20 songs over a two month period and the ones that ended up on the new release were the songs where the lyrics came entirely at one sitting. These were just the most honest. We decided to choose these six and give them the best production we could manage instead of twelve songs with a watered down effort. Since this would be our calling card I think this was the best way to make a good impression right from the start.”
You can find this southern soul, funky band in the following  Facebook, YouTube and Vimeo and SoundCloud! Take a few moments to inspire your inner soul and check them out!
*This is a sponsored post and I was honored to receive compensation and gorgeous music to write this! All opinions, are of course, my own.*

I joined the Artist Success Series, you should too!

I joined the Artist Success Series and you should, too! I have been studying and preparing for… well that’s the problem! lol! For what??? Sure, I have lots of ideas in my head about what to do, what I’m doing, what I should be doing but what is really happening? Feels like I’m just going in circles, that’s what. Feels like I’m doing a lot, and yet NOT a lot of forward movement.

I first found Cari Cole when a friend started following her and doing one of her programs about a year ago. Great energy, right?!

jazz singer, las vegas, jazz trio, cari cole, artist success series

I dabbled a bit and never really did anything with her programs as it seemed I was always too busy. Really, Karen?? Too busy to take your career seriously?? Maybe what I mean is that I was not putting my focus in all the right places. Yes, I’m one busy chicksinger and momprenuer for sure! But, come on!! Whatcha waiting’ for??

This morning I had an “assignment” as a member of the Artist Success Series, to share my social media and write out my thoughts about being an artist and what kind of artist I am. It was really hard to classify myself and I have a feeling that is some of my issue. While I feel happy about my versatility as a performer and singer/pianist, I realize I need to so some real soul searching as to what I am and what I am bringing to my music and thus to my audience.

Many of you know I’ve been studying with a teacher I love and he has really changed my outlook on my work for the good. I practice differently, I sing and perform better and better. I have dreams to record original songs and make videos and so much more. The Artist Success Series came at just the right time for me. Check out the group and see if it’s a good fit for you! I have a feeling it just might be what you need, too! :-)

Review Stephanie O’Dea’s “The Mommy Blogger Next Door!”

I am so excited to share with you “The Mommy Blogger Next Door”,  by Stephanie O’Dea! This is the first book in an upcoming series about blogging. For me, it all started when I first searched for crockpot recipes and low and behold, this shows up…

Stephanie O'Dea Slow Cooker, mommy blogger, singer, las vegas

I mean, seriously cute, right?! I was totally captivated as I started wandering through her amazing page and completely forgot all about my crockpot! lol! Take a peek for yourself. You won’t be sorry! The next recipes on my list to try are  The All American Pot Roast and Chocolate Covered Strawberries and Apples, yum!

Back to her new book, The Mommy Blogger Next Door. I have shared Stephanie’s pages over the past year with several of my friends and my So Cal BFF, Jen sent me a link to Stephanie’s page and new book. I have been working on improving my blog on singing, music and being a Momprenuer for awhile now, with only small results. I have participated in a couple of NaBloPoMo’s with BlogHer and had some tinkering done on my wordpress site and still haven’t really taken things to the next level. So, when Jen saw this book posted on Stephanie’s page, she sent me the link right away! What a good friend!

I immediately signed up for her The Mommy Blogger Next Door newsletter.  I had downloaded the sample to check it out and decide if it was right for me. I’m always looking for clear, succinct ways to improve my blog. So, was it right for me? Full of the kind of information you ACTUALLY need to create readers, learn about PR and create a blog that could potentially bring in a full time living? OH YEAH, BABY!

jazz singer, blogging, las vegas, singing pianist, mommy blogger

From your online presence to time management, creating your voice, branding and how to monetize. How she went about making some serious money all while “in your jammies and fuzzy slippers” and while being home to take care of your kids. Love it! By the way, she uses the term “mommy blogger” for the sake of simplicity, but this book can and does inform anyone wanting to make their blog into a living. I love her story, it’s so inspiring! And, she shares many successful bloggers and what they are doing. I’m still working my way through them! So many great ideas and thoughts and bloggers out there!

I think what I love best about this book is her enthusiasm for what she is doing AND for helping and teaching you what to do. Her goal is help everyone who wants to make a living with their blog. Unlike many other books on blogging, it is NOT full of other books or programs to buy. While this is first in a series of books Stephanie intends to write, it is clear you can get a long way with your blogging skills with this book alone. You can find it on Amazon to download to your Kindle or Kindle app. If you want to improve your blog, get some real world skills and perhaps even make some real money, you most definitely need this book! I may even have to do a giveaway if I see some great comments! :-)

Full disclosure statement: I was gifted this fabulous book to read and then share with you. I was not compensated for this post, but I’m gonna have to buy Stephanie a nice glass of wine someday with all the money I make from her suggestions! :-)

Just putting it out in the Universe!

End of the year wrap up for this chicksinger!

Feeling pretty darn blessed at this fantastic year of change and growth! You can read about my move from corporate employed chicksinger to self-employed chicksinger and Mompreneur! It’s been truly exciting and wonderful to be able to schedule things around the important moments of our son’s life.

I’ve continued my studies of piano and voice with my amazing coach and I’ve written quite a bit about practicing and having a coach to keep you on track and maybe even be your therapist once in a while, lol! My studio has grown as well! I love sharing what I learn and know with fellow creatives.

Performing with Dangerous Curves has been particularly on the upswing this year! From singing with the amazing Lena Prima, to our own show’s both corporate and public, here’s a few moments from our year together…

My word and theme for 2015…fitspiration!

My word and theme for 2015… After deliberate thinking and lots of reading some of the ladies of blogging I love, (like her and her and her) I have decided to make up a word to accommodate my wish list for my perfect word for the year.

Fitspiration!

fitspiration, instagram chicksinger, las vegas singer, momprenuer

So what does fitspiration mean? Inspired to be fit, physically, mentally, spiritually and financially! Inspired by my family to be healthy, inspired by my music to find the look I see for myself and lastly, I want fitness for my body and my brain. I want to wake up everyday and feel good about myself, on the outside and on the in.

From sleeping better, to eating better, to walking and dancing and more! I want to really and truly know what it’s like to be thin and fit and feel amazing. I have almost been there…once. Foolishly, I let that opportunity slip by. But, now I am ready to take up the challenge again! This has been a fantastic year, filled with change and growth. I have been with my music coach (and sometimes, it seems life coach!) for just over a year and the progress I have made is so exciting! I have been out of my wacky singing waitress gig for just over 6 months now and while the transition to full time Mompreneur and working from home has been all I hoped, (the Little Man’s grades are awesome and snuggle time has greatly increased!) it is still a challenge financially.

I want to be at the top of my game. Emotionally, mentally, physically, spiritually, artistically and financially. The only way to make that happen is to use the fitspiration around me! God, my husband, my child, my family and friends, my music, my business! These are my fitspirations!

More juice, less junk! More walking, less sitting! More praying, less worrying! More practicing, less time wasting! More believing, less doubting. MORE LOVING! This is our family Christmas selfie…talk about fitspiration!

family selfie, jazz singer las vegas, pianist las vegas, singer las vegas

So, I welcome you, 2015. I’d love to inspire and empower you, my friends, to find your word for the year and share with me how you are going to improve your life and make this your fabulous break out year!

I’ll be posting one last time for my end of year post, please be sure to check back or even better sign up for notifications!

Get out of your comfort zone! Let’s do it!

Get out of your comfort zone! Let’s do it! Hey listen, I know! It’s tough to get out of your comfort zone. But that is what we must do in order to grow. And, if you want to grow in ways you never thought you could, I am here to tell you that it’s all about that damn comfort zone. If you WANT something you have never had before, then it’s gonna take DOING something you’ve never done before.

image

I was thinking about this very subject this morning. Before school, in the freezing cold (ok, well freezing cold for Las Vegas!) the Little Man and I left a few minutes early and went pine cone hunting for a project at school. I drove over to a section of our neighborhood with lots of pine trees and we climbed up the side of a small hill and searched for pine cones. There we were, sliding down the hill in the dirt, picking up pine cones and then screaming and throwing them down if there was a bug on it, laughing so hard…well you get the picture.

When we got back in the car, my son say’s “that was the craziest most fun thing we’ve ever done, Mommy! awesome!! can we do it again, tomorrow?” My heart was so full, it was about to burst! For me, being a Mommy means being out of my comfort zone all the time. Climbing hills, learning Minecraft (his current passion!) going to Jiu Jitsu. Come on, what the heck do I know about Jiu Jitsu?? I watch the teacher to see how I can help and then I find myself rolling around the living room demonstrating some move. Why?? Why would I do all this?? Because I would do anything for my kid. I’ll help him in anyway I can to learn and grow. Even if it means being out of my comfort zone.

Las Vegas jazz singer, comfort zone, momprenuer

That’s when it hit me. DUH!!! Apply that to yourself, girl! Get yourself the hell out of your comfort zone and get in the game in ways you’ve never dreamed of!  So I made a list of things I HATE to do and things I don’t know how to do and wish I did. Things that take me out of my comfort zone. Things that just may improve my body and my voice and my playing and my performing and my LIFE and take them to levels I’ve only dreamed of.  What would that be like? I intend to find out. What about you?
