Piano study and professional level athletes

My piano study and voice study has been increasingly ramping up and at my last lesson, we discussed how Olympic and professional level athletes train. Which is why it has been so long since my last post! Between being a new-ish Momprenuer ( I am now completely self-employed!), wife and CEO of our home and life and Mommy to an almost first grader (where is the time going???). Life is truly busy from the moment I get up, to the moment I fall back into bed.

So, of course, why not add to my list?! LOL!  I mean, come on! Life is to be lived and I intend on living EVERY moment to the fullest!

I had a great gig, the night before my lesson and even though it went really well, I asked myself as I was driving home with my sweet Little Man sleeping in the back, “what would it be like to be TRULY amazing?” You know the kind of amazing that makes people stop in their tracks. The kind of amazing that could elicit words like “chills” and dare – I – say – it “genius”. So, I asked my teacher. My Julliard trained, Broadway veteran, composer and arranger BEYOND talented teacher…gulp. So, of course, he told me…in no uncertain terms…what to do. We came up with a practice schedule of piano study and voice study to commence when the Little Man goes back to school and will last until Christmas. Phase 1. GULP…

So, the next few weeks will be “get ready” mode! We will be getting the Little Man ready to start first grade, buying school supplies and school uniforms. I will be preparing and organizing my music and books and apps so that I can just run through each drill for piano or voice in a succinct way so that they build upon each other and maximize my time and effort. This new level of expertise work is requiring a lot of time and money and it must be well spent on both sides.

My students are already feeling the effects of this as their work and exercises have been increasingly up leveled. What’s fun is that not only do they notice, but they like it!! By sharing what I am learning with my students, it feels like the best kind of payback a teacher could possibly give.

So on that note♫ I hope you are enjoying a fabulous summer! After teaching a couple of lessons this morning I am off to my second lesson of the week.  And, I promise to write more and share more music with you. I am going to get back on my Song Saturday posts, too. If you want to request a song, just drop me a line! I have a short list going now and I’m happy to add your song to it! I leave you with a picture and quote one of my BFF’s sent me the other day. I just love it, don’t you?!

“The happiest genius will hardly succeed by nature and instinct alone in rising to the sublime. Art is art; he who has not thought it out has no right to call himself an artist. Here all groping in the dark is vain; before a man can produce anything great, he must understand the means by which he is to produce it.”  Goethe

Hanon, Snow Patrol and Lady Gaga

How is it possible that Hanon, Snow Patrol and Lady Gaga could find themselves in the same sentence? I’ll tell you how!

When you are working on improving your piano skills by studying and practice, then Hanon becomes a way of life! Honestly, I can’t remember a day without performing at least the first exercise 2-3 times in a row with a metronome setting of 72. You can read more about practicing, here.

Next up, Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol, a request by a client for their wedding for the bridesmaids to walk down the aisle. I admit I don’t watch a lot of TV, but this song was done on Grey’s Anatomy and when I was doing my research on the song I found this…

ummmmm…..HELLO!!! I have been a fan of Sara Ramirez since forever! What a beautiful song and once again my clients enrich my music life. Love that!

Lady Gaga. “sigh” Talent, beauty, wacky. A girl after my own heart. Seriously, my inner rock goddess sports blonde and purple hair, lots of tattoos, plays piano like Elton John and sings like Janis Joplin meets Adele… just keepin’ it real.

What do you think of this??? Let’s see how my weight loss work goes,,,but OMG, isn’t it SO SO pretty??!!

23477755_IIDtMzNT_c

I am working on my own acoustic version of a couple of her songs and I hope to be brave enough to post them in the coming months. Born This Way and You and I  are the songs I’m working on…wheee!!! I’m excited to share that with you as it puts me on the spot and propels me towards my ultimate goal of covering the songs that speak to me deeply and personally and that resonate in ways that make me want to share with you!

Ok, time to begin my day of teaching and then being taught! ;-) Have a wonderful Thursday and if you are in Vegas, enjoy the rain!

2013 Year End Mashup! Theme for 2014…

2013 year end mashup for Karen Michaels Chicksinger! What a blessing of a year it has been! From our Little Man starting Kindergarten to lots of wonderful gigs with my girl group, Dangerous Curves and my own jazz band, The Special K Project, my studio, Chicksinger Studios growing leaps and bounds and starting with a new piano and voice teacher, this year has been filled to the brim with love and music and excitement from start to finish! In fact, here’s a fun little FlipGram of my year!

So, it’s time for the New Year’s Rez thing and although I admit to loving them, in the past few years I have been revising it a bit. Last year I did a word of the year and it was “Time”.  I worked on adding more time to Mommyland and continuing my work of transitioning from working  for someone else to working for myself! I am still in that transition, but it is coming to a rapid close. More about that here on Nevada Mama.

One thing I have definitely made time for this year is reading more. Not just any reading but “smart” reading. Through Bloglovin’ I have found everything from DIY, to diet info, crafts, writing, yoga and life as a Mommy. You can find the ones I like by looking at my list on my profile at Bloglovin’ but my hands down absolute favorite blogger, though, is Momastery‘s, Glennon Melton. Honest, brave and I find I agree with her on so many points. And, so because of her and her lovely, courageous words, my word and theme for this year is…

JUMP!

I will jump in with both feet.

I will jump to my families needs.

I will jump to my own needs, too.

I will jump to practice my music.

I will jump to be the absolute best singer.

I will jump to mention Jesus and God and all that stuff.

I will jump to have the most rocking’ bod I have ever had.

I will jump to improve my business.

I will jump to thinking the best of my fellow woman and man.

I will jump to defend myself.

I will jump to defend my friends who live their lives differently than others.

I will jump to show unconditional love.

I will jump to shut my mouth as often as I need to.

I will jump to say only that which brings uplifting, loving messages to those who hear me.

That’s a lot of jumping! lol! I am setting my sights hit and why not?

There’s no time like the present!

And, so…I want you all to know that truly I love you and I am so grateful to know you and share with you. I have many plans for my music and how I am going to share it with you. I am beyond grateful for all of your love and support. Let’s live our lives to the absolute fullest. It is a gift from God and we must use it as such.

Let’s go…let’s do it…let’s JUMP!!!

Reviews of fabulous new music apps from Karen Michaels Chicksinger

Reviews of fabulous new music apps from Karen Michaels Chicksinger! Oh yes, I admit it…I am an app-aholic. I am constantly on the hunt for new, fun, educational apps for my Little Man and of course, for my music. I wrote a post not long ago about my Fave Music Apps and I thought at the time I had a pretty darn good list for a while…until my fabulous coach shared one app with me and I found the other one!

The first one is from a company called Sibelius. They have some amazing desktop programs and I happen to be learning Sibelius. What I’m talking about is called Auralia. If you want to TRULY improve your musicianship and voice then this app is all you need. I do the pitch and melody training with my teacher on a weekly basis and I am saving up to buy this app for myself. It is not too expensive at $99-$149, but it is indispensable. In just a few short weeks, I have improved so much, imagine if I were able to do that everyday! But, as a self-produced Musician Momprenuer, I have to watch my budget! So, what did my wandering Twitter eyes find the other day?! Right there on Twitter Auralia was talking about a new app they have come out with! It is Interval Recognition and I have started using it every morning for about 10 minutes and I am already noticing a difference! It’s fun, it’s easy to use and very affordable! What could be better?!

Next up is Singer’s Studio. OMG!!! Honestly, this app is so amazing to this geek girl I can hardly stand it! IT TELLS YOU THE PERCENTAGE AT WHICH YOU ARE SINGING IN TUNE!!! WHAT?! Look at these pictures I grabbed from their page. Utterly amazing! The price point on this is a little higher at about $14, but honestly, I expected it to be much higher when I realized what it was doing. If you actually want to be a better singer, then this is an absolute must buy!

Last Day Of NaBloPoMo and this Las Vegas Chicksinger learned a lot!

This Las Vegas Chicksinger has learned a lot, in the last 30 days! I missed posting this last week. With studying and the holiday, my sweet Little Man and husband, something had to give and it was this.

I do want to share my holiday table with you…

jazz singer, las vegas

My pretty Spode table!

I am not going to count it as defeat. I learned that writing for your blog and readers is all about continuous writing and post planning. I still have so much to say and so much to share! I want to hear from you, whether you are new here or have followed for a while. I met with a marketing friend who gave me some fantastic advice for making this blog the best it can be. The first of which is reading “WordPress For Dummies”.  It’s downloading now. ;-)

And, now we all find ourselves once again at the end of the year. A mere 31 days until 2014 appears. Did you accomplish what you set out to do? Did you get closer to your goals?

The gift of another year!

For the next 31 days, I am going to evaluate where I am, where I am going and where I want to be this time next year. I hope to see you here, next year on November 30th. I want you to tell me what you have accomplished and what a spectacular year you’ve had! And, I will do the same…. Phew! Made the last day with 17 minutes to spare!

Treating my small business, like a big business, Karen Michaels Chicksinger

Treating my small business, like a big business, Karen Michaels Chicksinger…what a novel idea! This week, I had 4 hours of no call, no shows or extremely late calls, (1 hour before). Frustrating…right now , I am sitting drinking coffee at home as my family went out to breakfast and I didn’t go because I had students coming. “sigh”

jazz singer, las vegas

For sure!!

I admit that I am completely easy going. I am a working Mom and as a singer, sometimes, last minute gigs will come up. Cross fingers, I have a possible one next Saturday. That being said, I don’t do contracts, I don’t do pre-pay and if you text me within 2 hours, I really don’t get bugged. I know how busy, crazy life can be! But, really….NO CALL?! 1 hour?! I think it’s time for a change.

I have started to write out what next year will bring. I believe in that. And, my studio and the work I love is a big part of that! Change, it is a com in’! Look out! Please don’t mistake my nice-ness for meekness.  Enough said…I’m going to turn grapes into wine by using this precious time to practice. And, yes, btw, some of  you I know personally have asked if I will post something of me playing the piano and I just might do that on day 30!

Today, I am grateful for the strength to keep going and keep moving forward and to keep believing. God has touched my shoulder, yet again, today.
