Networking…how do you do it? I’d love to hear!

How exactly do you get out there and network? Do you figure out where people are headed? Do you find the one person you want to chat up and make sure you go to their gig or hang? Facebook groups? Emails, cold calls???

I had an unexpected and great conversation with one of my favorite people. What became abundantly clear is that I need to get out there and network. In the flesh, face to face. Listen, talk, share and be seen. Finished, end of story. Sigh… Just do it as the saying goes.

I never really thought of it, to tell you the truth. I mean, I see people when I’m performing, I talk about my work on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram. Isn’t that enough? No, it is not. Especially after hearing what my friend had to say. People want to see your face and hear you say it and even better, see you do it! Live and in person! Oh.

So, on that note ♪♫☼♫♪ (I just couldn’t resist) I’ll see you out there!

Worlds colliding…and I love it!

World’s colliding and I love it! Today was one of those days that I truly love. Got up early on this super cold (for Vegas anyway!) and made a nice hot breakfast for the Little Man and then got him off to school. Then I did a little housecleaning, got ready, gathered my music and off to Summerlin I drove for rehearsal with Dangerous Curves. We are the hosts of this week’s Suncoast Variety Show on Thursday! It’s a fun afternoon show featuring the local talent of Vegas. We love performing at the beautiful SunCoast!

Then I raced through Fresh and Easy, picked up some snacks and groceries, set up the homework station and prepped dinner. Tonight it’s my turn to host a few kids for homework and my Mommy friend is taking an online class so I have a full liter tonight! LOL! And, you know what…I love it! Best job ever…(✿◠‿◠)❀ ♫❤

Scheduling and money…how do YOU do it? A keeping’ it real, post.

Scheduling and money…how do YOU do it?  This is a keeping’ it real post. Sharing my soul with you. The last 2 weeks my schedule was and is really tough. If not for the help of my husband, my MIL and my friend and neighbor, something would have had to give. Either my Little Man missing out on his Jiu Jitsu class or party, or me having to give up a gig. Neither of which is good.

I have been completely a self-employed Mommy since the middle of May when my gig of 14 years ended. Don’t get me wrong! I was COMPLETELY ready for the change and was planning my own exit. They merely hurried it along by closing the venue. To be able to schedule my life to contribute to our bottom line so it’s not all on my hubby and accommodate my son and be the Mom who is at home a lot and do homework and volunteer in class and PTA is a dream come true! I’ve just got to continue to get better at things. To be more efficient at scheduling, organizing and…asking for money.

There, I’ve said and I still hate it! Why is it so hard to talk about money with prospective clients??? With my voice and piano lessons it is a bit easier as I have an amount that is set by the company I represent. I used to make lots of deals, and give lots of discounts on my teaching. I still do it for very close friends. But, for new people, I don’t any more. I realized that 2 things happen. The people who had the best deal, cancelled the most! WHAT?! That fact really blew me away. The other thing that happened is that I felt resentful towards them. That is completely no bueno. I am teaching the very thing that is my passion and my love and my artistry and I feel crappy about it?!?! Ugh. No more.

Here’s the funny thing that happened… I am busier than ever with lessons! And, I LOVE my students so much! I have kids who are so talented my heart is bursting for them. My pros are so brave and so courageous and I am honored that they trust me with their talent. It’s a fabulous feeling.

Next up is my live performance work. OY. That is a whole other can of worms. The first and last problem I have is that I don’t have a good video. DUH. I mean really come on, Karen. It’s amazing that I have been so fortunate to have some great work from just audio and pics. Plus, once I get someone on the phone, they do understand I am the real deal and will give them a fantastic music experience. However, this is the age of YouTube and I need to get over my fear of how I look and sound on video and just do-my-thang. Place real and actual value on myself and what I do. If I don’t do that, I can’t possibly expect a client to want to spend their hard earned money on me. No one else can do what I do. Yes, lots of people DO what I do. But, not the way I do it. That’s what I have to remember and share. Video is coming and I’ll share it here with you!

How do you deal with placing value on yourself and/or your product? I’d love to hear from you!

Coffee, tea and chicksingers! LOVE it! I had the most awesome coffee date with a girl who started out as one of my cyber-friends on YouTube and has turned into my real life friend! I LOVE that!!

workin’ girl! come on let’s SING!

Workin’ girl, indeed! time to SING! I’m a little behind with my NaBloPomo posts due to the fact that my schedule to sing and teach is off-the-charts! Yippee! It started early Friday morning when, at 730am, my amazing hairstylist Christie did my hair for my busy show weekend!

las vegas singer, jazz singer Hairdo selfie accommplished and off I go to pack my car and meet up with the curvy girls for our road trip to Mesquite! Ok, it’s only 90 minutes from Vegas, but still! We were off to sing with Lena Prima, the oh-so-talented daughter of legendary Louis Prima. Not only is she a fabulous chicksinger, she is as true and authentic and lovely, off stage as she is onstage. Check out her page at Reverbnation, her original music is awesome!!! You will, no doubt, be hearing more from this incredible woman.

The show was a blast and we had so much fun talking and singing and giggling! Lots of giggling this trip! Always a good thing!

The next morning after a quick cup of coffee, we jumped in the car, dropped off Lisa so she could head off to her jazz trio gig, and headed to the M Resort, for a show called “An Evening with the Next Generation”, where Gret and I sang back ups for not only Lena, but also Ricci Martin, Dean Martin’s son! I also got to meet Lorna Luft (daughter of Judy Garland) which was tremendous. Another fabulous show that I was excited to be a part of.

Sunday morning came way to early with a few students of piano and an audition prep and then phew! Time for some afternoon family fun! I even got to visit one of my favorite stores the Paper Source and filled some of my crafty needs.

Monday brings a rehearsal for Dangerous Curves as we prepare for the many shows we have coming up in November and December. Talk about using all of my vocal technique to stay in good voice!!! Seriously, lots of warm ups, lots of nice hot tea and honey and fresh juices, too. I’ve got to get back into my walking program…good cardio health is essential to great singing and I have definitely been remiss in my cardio work.

Tuesday brought my lesson and it was filled with learning how to write charts properly, ear training work and of course, a little therapy. ;-) My teacher is a big supporter in me and my projects as he is with all of us lucky enough to call him teacher. He is tough and loving, strict and resourceful. I strive to emulate him as both a performer and a teacher.

Gotta share what’s coming up! It is already the holiday season! I sincerely hope I get to see you at one of our shows. And, if you need a stocking stuffer…may I suggest some lovely Christmas music? Here’s the link to buy our Christmas music on iTunes or if you’d like an autographed actual CD, go here! Love ya! (✿◠‿◠)♫❤

Foodie Post! One Pot Pasta!

Foodie Post! One Pot Pasta! Ok, so my husband was totally helping me with an awesome post I had set for today… until today got completely away from me! Darn! So, I’m holding that thought for a day when his brilliant words aren’t wasted…

That being said, I lit up my Instagram with my awesome (if I do say so myself) dinner tonight! My goals for cooking are simple…healthy, quick, delicious and good-on-the-budget.

Here it is!!! One Pot Pasta! The heart in the middle is my homemade bone broth frozen for such moments. Italian tomatoes, fresh basic and onions, garlic and 2 cups of water. Put the dry pasta in (I know! crazy!) bring to a boil and then let simmer about 10-15 minutes. DONE! We had a great dinner and I was able to get most of my chores and to do list done (it’s really long today).

We’re off to bed as the day starts SO early tomorrow, and I’m a bit under the weather with lots of songs to sing this weekend. This girl is in desperate need of beauty sleep! I’m excited to share my day with you tomorrow! It’s a day filled with beauty treats, curvy girls, a little travel and lots of gorgeous music!

Sweet dreams friends! See you tomorrow!
